It is only to the end up that it starts to break down, nevertheless slap-up finale rescues they from the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and intelligently dialogued, it will have no higher challenge in living down its extremely unappealing label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie movements within a quick rate, the new discussion was smooth and you will characterisations generally effective. Dick Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct the fresh shed professionally, because detective is actually played with significant aplomb by that individual personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody in the The brand new Yorker indexed “So it terse and you will taut motion picture noir was centered on the intimate and you will professional problems of the identity reputation, this new violent mastermind (starred from the Manhood Powell) about a stylish illegal gambling establishment. New film’s author and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, for mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) did at the casino and dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely regulated body language out-of like and you can hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will smartly assertive images (along with his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet in depth spectacle an invisible antique of the style.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, once the an authorities inspector, including in the score . Although the patch follows a familiar pattern, the characterizations was fresh while the activities adequate to overbalance. Dialog was terse and you will relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney contact. Unusual digital camera angles show up once in a while in order to intensify appeal and you will briefly stop the eye. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling due to the fact director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, totally new writer and user manufacturer, together with supports rendering it a soft development.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a question of viewing Mr. Powell proceed through their paces fashionably if you find yourself a massive cast off stars and you will actresses promote your regular help. Evelyn Keyes performs the good nothing woman who brings forth the fresh best in him and Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and slinky vixen exactly who gets your towards jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy since the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a unique able tour because a weary police inspector just who fundamentally shuts the way it is. A lot of sipping and you may puffing is accomplished from the every alarmed.” [ twelve ]
